Show UTO N I A NNineteen TwelveFootballThe Season of Nineteen TenBy Coach BennionFOR several reasons the football season of 1910 will be long remembered by Utah. First, the team was entirely composed of men of college grade; second, fresh impetus was given the sport by the new rules of play; and, third, an increased number of spectators showed keen appreciation at the best schedule of games that Utah ever had. When Utah became a member of the Rocky Mountain Conference in 1910, she bound herself to such stringent new eligibility laws as the Freshman and one semester residence rules. Although undoubtedly valuable, these rules naturally worked a hardship the first year, cutting down materially the number of men eligible for play. In fact, the number was so small that every man that tried out for the team made it. The good work of the squad, however, must not be overlooked. Besides being a well-rounded, and balanced team- it contributed more men to the All-Rocky Mountain team than had gone from Utah in all previous years put together. In fact, not withstanding its handicaps, the 1910 eleven was one of the greatest Utah ever turned out.The 1910 revision of the rules for play proved quite satisfactory, for it made the gamie at once more spectacular and more safe. Except for a few bruises caused by overwork on account of a small squad, the men met with no accidents in the games, and with the new sodded field on which to practice, most of them went through the season unscratched. iNever before did Salt Lake see so many spectacular games in one season. Utah met all the best Colorado and Utah teams and proved herself inferior to none, equal to all, and superior to many. The Mines game, 6-0, the D. U. game, 20-0, and the Aggie game, 6-0, all in favor of Utah, and the Colorado College game, 21-17, in favor of C. C, will long be remembered by the great crowds who saw them.In spite of the fact that we lose some mighty good' seniors this year, prospects are bright for a still more successful season in 1911. With Capt. Romney, Sam Ole-son, Dune Gardner, Summer, Dez Bennion, Dean, Peterson, O. Romney, and possibly Carmichael, Nielsen, and Christensen as a nucleus, and Ashton, Sutherland, Dillman, Karrick, Hampton, Hamilton, Rynearso'n, Meyer, Nyman, Kirby, and Wim-mier of this year's Freshman team, and Tommy Fitzpatrick, Gardner, Holmstead, Erickson, Lofgren, Olsen, Winternitz, and Dow Young-an excellent amount of material-everyone is expecting that next year Utah's will be champion team) of the Rocky Mountain country.162 |
