Show 44 REPORT OF THE COMMISSIONER OF INDIAN AFFAIRS. I REDUCTION OF RESERVATIONS. The work of reducing the arha of the reservations, by extingnish-ing by purchase from the Indians their title to the land and itsrestom-tion to the public domain, has been carried forward rapidly, as is shown in the following detailed statements : Counting the 22 small reserves of the Mission Indians of California as only one reserve and the 19 Poeblo reserves,of New Nexico as one also, the number of reservations as given in the annual report of this office for 1890 was 138, having i n aggregate area of about 104,314,349 acres, or 162,991 square miles. This amount is about 12,071,380 acres, or 18,861 equare miles, less than the amount reported in 1889, while at the pres-ent time there are five more reservation8 than in 1859, owing to the di-vision of the Great Sioux Reservation, as provided by act of Merch 2, 1889. Tbe agreements ratified by act of Congress approved February 13, 1891 (26 Stacs., 749), restored t o the public domain 391,184.65 azres from the Sac and Fox Reservations, in Oklahoma, including 25,194.61 acres for school purposes; and from the Iowa Reservation, in the same Territory, 219,446.27acres, iuclnding 12;371.75acres for sohool purposes. Theratification of agreements by the act of March 3,1891 ('26 Stats., 9S9), restored to the public domain from the Pottawatomie Reservation, Ok-lahoma, 309,134.77 acres, including 22,650.44 for school purposes; from the Cheyenne and Arapaho Reservation, Oklahoma, about 3,000,000 mres; from the Cceur d'Al6ne Reservation, Idaho, about 185,000 acres; from the Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota, about 1,600,000 acres; from th'e Lake Traverse Reservatiou, South Dakotit, about 660,000 acres, and from the Crow Reservation, Montana, about 1,800,000 ; a total of about 8.164,765 acres.
