Carpenter Supervising Forecaster, Salt Lake City, Utah This study is an endeavor to make more practical use of the upper air data available to the modern forecaster. The year 1946 was selected for the study. Surface and 700-mb. maps and charts were reviewed simultantously. For each 24-hour period data were selected from two representative Raob stations upstream. Occur rence and non-occurrence of surface precipitation within 700 miles upstream was also noted. Thirteen different combinations of data were tested, and useful parameters were arranged in a table in such a manner that a precipitation index (PI) could be evaluated. .
