Show The Status of Education In Utah, 1947 John T. Wahlquist Dean. School of Education, University of Utah Utah's Centennial affords an opportunity to appraise the achievements of the state and its citizens in the first century. In any civilization, educational achievements are noteworthy. Un doubtedly, attainments in education reflect the philosophy of the people. In fact, from one point of view, the educational status of For a given people is the most important information about them. these reasons, we propose to present brief resumes of some recent, significant studies of education in Utah. Finally, we intend to generalize upon the basis of the facts revealed in the several studies." I On the eve of Utah's Centennial a very significant study" concluded, "Utah easily outclasses all other states in over-all per formance in education." A more careful inspection reveals the date of the data as being 1940, not 1946. Nevertheless, the data re flect the actual situation in the various states of the union in the last normal year before W orId War II. 1:he authors, President Emeritus Raymond M. Hughes and Professor William H. Lancelot of Iowa State College, constructed a balance sheet of the states (See Table I below) involving seven columns and revealing for each state (I) accomplishment in edu cation; (2) the ability to support education; (3) the degree to which accomplishment is commensurate with ability; (4) the degree of effort to provide for education; (5) the efficiency of educational effort; (6) the educational level of the adult popula tion; and (7) the apparent educational ranks on the basis of the all-around general performance, based on the average ratings in the other columns-omitting (2) Ability, and giving (1) Ac cornplishment a weight of 2.
