Show A Survey of Foreign Language Teaching In the High Schools of the State of Utah G. Raymond Poulter For a long time teachers of foreign language in the State of Utah have been dissatisfied with the position held by languages in the high school curriculum. Bearing in mind that the value of foreign languages has been a storm center in many examinations of the curriculum, the writer undertook to find out as nearly as possible the past and present status of foreign language teaching in the high schools of the State. The following items were especi all y studied. 1. The trends in enrollment in foreign language in the public and private high schools of the State, including a comparison of the status of the various languages. 2. The number of schools and the enrollment in schools where at least one foreign language is included in the curriculum. 3. The number of schools and the total enrollment in schools where no foreign language is offered. To compare the percentage of students enrolled in lan the total enrollment in schools where a language is with guages offered. 5. To compare the percentage of students enrolled III the with the total enrollment in the high schools of the 4. languages State. 6. To compare Utah with neighboring states and Conti nental United States as far as data are available. 7. To investigate the school library facilities for foreign language study. 8. To determine whether there is uniformity or lack of uni formity in the textbooks used. 9. To investigate the items below with respect to the teach of foreign languages: training and preparation, tenure, ex perience, remuneration, sex and teaching load, including (a) num ber of taught per day, (b) size of classes, and (c) other ers periods subjects taught. 10. To determine the aims and objectives for the courses held by the language teachers of Utah and contemporary writers in this field to ascertain the value of foreign language study.
