Amado Chaves 425 was the first superintendent of public instruction and performed the duties of the office with great credit. Under his supervision there was great improvement, schools were established, buildings erected and, in all portions of New Mexico, educational matters received an impetus which has never been retarded. He is a direct lineal descendant Gen. Bernardino Duran de Chaves, who came to New Mexico with Don Diego . . in 1692. The line of descent is Diego Antonio Duran de Chaves, hen ntonio Chaves, Julian Chaves, and Manuel Antonio Chaves, the father of Don Amado. All of his immediate ancestors were prominent in the military and civil affairs of New Mexico covering a period of two centuries.
