Hidalgo’s ery had not been in vain. The fires of revolution which this noble curate had lighted on the 15th of September, 1810, had burned fiercely and finally resulted in the independence of Mexico. The revolt against the Spanish yoke had been carried on, with varying success, until February 24, 1821. On that day, the plan of Iguala, asserting the independence of Mexico, was adopted and proclaimed. From this time the revolutionists were generally successful, and on the 24th day of August, what is known as the treaty of Cordoba was signed by General Agustin de Iturbide for Mexico, and by Viceroy Don Juan O’Donoju, for Spain, the latter, however, not acting under authority from his governm ent. By the terms of this treaty the independence of Mexico was recognized, a constitutional monarchy established, and Ferdinand VII invited to the throne. Hostilities, however, did not cease until the City of Mexico was taken by Iturbide, September 27, 1821, whereby the independence of Mexico was consummated. A junta or provisional council, consisting of thirty-six members, was immediately created under the plan of Iguala. This body ap- pointed a regency of five persons, with General Iturbide as president and commander-in-chief of the army and navy.
