Show '1JOC'I}}£-I '1J IYLLO (j 'U'E ( The Utah Museum of Fine Arts, University of Utah February, 1993 A MESSAGE FROM THE CURATOR OF EDUCATION I was disappointed at the attendance for the January Docent Meeting. I know the·weather was bad but these meetings do help all the docents to stay current on new exhibitions. Barclay Hastings gave an insightful look at several photographic styles which, I know, will provide the docents who attended with a new tool to examine the Bravo Exhibition and help them to interpret it to the school groups. DOCENT MEETING Write February 11 at 1:00 p.m. into your calendar!!! David Pursley, Curator of Education at the Salt Lake Art Center will provide a creative approach on stylistic differences in art using our permanent collections and our new exhibitions. This should be just the shot in the arm we need for our "winter doldrums". NEW HANDS-ON OBJECTS The following objects are now available for you to use with the school classes: 1. Pre-Columbian Whistle: whistles were part of the ritual objects used in pre-Columbian religious ceremonies. Music was used to honor the gods and to call their attention to the workship of their human devotees. This particular whistle has a small container held by the human which might have been used to hold copal incense. The smoke of the incense was thought to be pleasing to the gods and to increase the possibility that they would listen to your plea. 2. Greek Oil Lamps: made of terra cotta by lamp makers the design of these utilitarian objects was evolved from simple open saucers to more elaborate, closed body type like our examples. At first hand made, molds were later developed. 3. Tlatilco Clay Animals: in the early Pre-Classic societies of central Mexico a wide variety of small clay figurines were made for use in funerary and fertility rituals. PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS A photography workshop on the Bravo Exhibition for high school teachers will be held on Saturday, February 6. If any docent would like to sit in please contact Betsy. "SEEDS OF CHANGE "AT PUBLIC LIBRARY The Salt Lake City Public Library will host the traveling exhibiton "Seeds of Change: 500 Years of Encounter and Exchange" from January 30 to February 28. This exhibition commemorates the anniversary of Columbus's voyages by focusing on the exchange of plants, animals and peoples that resulted. There is an opening reception and a six week lecture series planned to complement the exhibiton. Information is posted on the docent bulletin board. Be sure to look!!! |
