Show 'lJOC'E/J{rr 'lJ I.9LLO(jil'E ( fhe Utah Museum of Fine Arts, University of Utah A Message from the New Curator of Education I would like to express how pleased I am to be here at the Museum. Even in this brief time I have been able to gauge the deep committment and enthusiasm which motivate you. I think I knew the first time I saw a docent sit on the floor with her students that this would be "home". I am committed to maintaining the high standards which Sue and Kaye set for you and, as I settle in and have a chance to speak with you, I hope to discuss your ideas about future goals and directions. Salt Lake City Schools Tours Start Early! ( Critics have described the works of John Nieto as "visceral." No matter what words are used to describe the coming exhibition it is certainly a feast for the eyes and will have wide student appeal. To enable all fourth grade students to see the Nieto exhibit we have scheduled the Salt LakeSchools Tours to begin January 26, 1993 and go through March 5, a month earlier than usual. The teaching concept and objectives will permit you to make great connections between the Nieto exhibit and the permanent collection. Teachin~ concept: Students will recognize similarities and differences in the styles of artists andcultures. Leamin~ objectives;Styles in art are created by the way the elements of art are used. Artists use a variety of mediums. A style may be realistic or abstract. We'll work with these objectives in the workshop. "lr~£~W~a..VA~ Guadalupe School Art Program Praise and thanks to Jody Schrontz for her work in organizing and implementing a two month art program involving many classroom activities and museum visits with children of the Guadalupe School. Children of the Hispanic community have a chance to learn about and work with the elements of art in the creation of their own expressive art works. Jody commented, " It takes a while to de-program the children from drawing stereotypical 'house and sky with suns in the corner' paintings to something more expressively about themselves. " The children visited the Museum during December, when they had a chance to hang their Navajo rug ornaments on the Museum tree. They will visit the Museum again on Saturday, January 16th for a special Guadalupe School- family day program where the children will have a chance to meet John Nieto. |
