Show METHOD Particrp'ants Special education teachers identified children with intellectual disabilities who engaged in problem behaviors in the classroom. The children involved in the study were required to have the cognitive ability to understand the process of the group contingency. They also had to be able to understand that they were working together in a group to earn a reward for everyone in the group. The participants had to show knowledge of what types of behavior are appropriate and not appropriate for the classroom Nine participants who engaged in consistent problem behaviors such as aggression, talk-outs, disturbing others, inappropriate noises, self-injury, and destruction of materials were involved in the study. I contacted the parents of these children and provided them with information about the study. If a parent expressed interest in having his or her child participate, I gave him or her additional information, including information regarding consent for their child's participation. Following parental consent, an informal observation ofthe child was conducted. This evaluation was conducted in order to make sure that each participant engaged in the problem behaviors at an appropriate rate. This decision was made based on professional judgement. The participants ranged in age and grade level. They were 10 to 12 years old and in the fourth through sixth grade. All of the |
