Show Chronic Diseases Diseases of the Heart (ICD-9 Codes: 390-398, 402,404-429; ICD-10 Codes: 100-109, 111, 113, 120-151) Compiled by Nathan Harris, Jennifer Mantyla, Jeffrey Sollis, and Ryan VanOrden 2001 Utah Heart Disease Deaths: 2.875 Diseases of the heart include rheumatic heart disease, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, hypertensive heart disease, and diseases of the valves and vessels connecting to the heart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and Utah. For the past twenty years, heart disease has been responsible for more than 2,000 deaths annually in Utah, but since 1986, mortality rates have steadily declined in the nation and the state (Figure 1). Since 1986, Utah has consistently had mortality rates from heart disease well below those of the nation, and regularly ranks among the three states with the lowest rates (Table 1). Risk factors for heart disease include smoking, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and family history. Utah ranks very low in the nation in the percentage of adults who smoke, and the majority of the state's adults have checked their cholesterol levels in the past five years (Table 2). Utah counties with the lowest mortality rates from heart disease are located primarily near Salt Lake City, while the southwestern region of the state had the highest rates. Utah males are about one and one half times more likely than Utah females to die of heart disease. Table 1.
