Show Infectious Diseases Pertussis (ICD-9=033, ICD-10=A37) Compiled by Lars Peterson 2002 Utah Pertussis Cases: 115 Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, was one of the most common childhood diseases and a major cause of childhood mortality in the United States prior to widespread use of the vaccine. The incidence rates of pertussis fluctuate annually with Utah's rate ranging from half to five times that of the nation. Pertussis primarily affects children under the age of one, and the large proportion of infants in our population could, in part, explain this annual variation. Utah experienced a statewide outbreak of pertussis cases in 1998 with 297 but the rate has since come back down to normal levels (Figure 1, Table 1). This outbreak occurred primarily among unvaccinated populations, highlighting the need to maintain vigilance in vaccination efforts. Table 1. Incidence of Pertussisa, Utah and U.S., 1980-1999.
