Show General Health Status Hospital Discharges by Major Disease Category Compiled by Rick Henriksen, Angie Finlinson, and Kristien McDonald The following data demonstrate trends in hospital discharges for patients in Utah. Table 1 presents the number of hospital discharges by major disease category (MDC) in 52 Utah hospitals from 1993-2001. Patients were categorized by MDC of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). These data are useful in recognizing trends in hospital discharges in Utah. For example, patients discharged after being treated for diseases of the nervous system increased every year from 1992-1998. but have since declined during the last two years. This trend is in contrast to the discharge trend for eye diseases for which there were 1,375 discharges in 1992 compared to 265 discharges in 2000, which may be due to increased outpatient treatment replacing hospitalizations. If these data are examined in conjunction with the next page, which deals with cost, then these data are also useful to evaluate health care costs in Utah. For example, in 2001 there were 5,020 discharges for people with problems related to the hepatobiliary system and pancreas, hi contrast, although 36% more people were discharged for mental diseases and disorders, it cost over 4 million dollars more to treat those with problems related to the hepatobiliary system and pancreas. These data can affect how policy makers will decide upon which diseases our health policy programs and resources will be focused. Table 18.
