Show THE OLD WATERMARK 30 Most of the early watermarks portraying the human figure an head were ccel esi -al in nature, which was natural,as the churc penetrated the workshops of the ancient craftsmen in a manne that cannot be conceive Nothing really artistic in th R KA tive cxample of the perio A representa watermarking of portraits was accomplished until the middle o the cighteenth century, when we find the French and Germa papermakers making outline portraits of prominent personages The mark of King Friedrich is a representative example of th art as it was practiced as late as 1750 In arranging papermarks in classes according to their subjects the third group or division would embrace such marks as flowers trees, leaves, vegetables, grain, plants, and fruit. In a number o the old emblems there are also combinations of vegetation and th works of man, such as a bunch of grapes with a bell or crown, o a pott or jug holding flowers or leaves.
