It docs no xo The general postoffice was established in England in 1670, bu the posthorn watermark dates from the fourteenth centur ze of paper a special pair of moulds was needed and the labou and expense of fashioning these moulds were too great to permit such extraordinary variety of dimensions. In later years, to be sure arks as foolscap, hand, post pott, etc, did denote sizes o paper, but these appellations were not used as size names unti many years affer the establishment of these particular emblems a watermarks, morcover there were many mills using the same desigas on different sizes of sheets. The foolscap mark traces to 1479 mark for this size of paper. Watermarks of potts or jugs are scldom found after the seventeenth century, being replaced by th Dutch or English arms. Hands were used extensively by the ol papermakers in Germany and the Netherlands, and at times thi mark resembled an iron gauntlt or glove, the initials or name o the maker often appearing on the wrist.
