Show EARL WRITER 9 chemist, living in Sweden. The earliest work in English on th bleaching of paper that has come to my attention is dated 1702 and is a small octavo pamphlet pointing out the absurdity of on firm having the monopoly of the process. Apparently the Messrs Taylors, English papermakers, [hought that their mill should, fo some reason not stated, have the exclusive use of this method o whitening their paper, and the little booklet of forty-three page was printed in Edinburgh as a protest against this mill having a exclusive privilege. The first technical workin Engli h relative t the chemical bl hing of paper, that can be traced, was publishe in London in 1799 and is a translation by William Nicholson o Newman Succt, London, of the work of Pajot des Charmes. Thi ook gives short artiles on the method of, "bleaching written o printed papers and rags, whether unbleached, dyed or coloured" also of the "bleaching of old written papers, to be worked u again."
