Show 30 PAPERMAKIN After watermarking became general, during the fiftenth century, it is seldom that a sheet of paper s found without a dis ‘guishing device. These emblems in most cases were placed in th centre of the sheets,or where the paper was folded in book print No. 17 The carly watermarks were simple forms that could be readil twisted in wir ing, but it is not unusual to find two symbols or designs each appearing in the middle of the halfsheet of paper. The watermarks from the origin of the art undil the latter part of the eightcent century when they began to lose their simplicity, may be consis ently divided into four divisions. The first of these classes woul embrace the carliest known watermarks, which appeared in th form of crosses, ovals, circles, knots, triangles, three-hill symbols and devices of the simplest kind that could have been readil twisted in wire. At this period there were also a great man Pom for r watermarking paper. Thi was a Greek cross with balls or circles placed at each end of th cross bars. Another similar mark which is found in fourtcenth cenn paper, is a circle surmounted by a Patriarchal or Papa cross. The papermarks of this first group were in use from th origin of the art, about the year 1280, until the first quarter of th fftcenth century ‘The second division of papermarks would include man and th works of man and in the latter class of this particular group w find the greatest number of subjects, extending intothousands upo Digital Imag © 2004 University of Utah.
