Show 6 PAPERMAKIN samples of paper cloth, and fifteen engravings, a few of whic have been coloured by hand. A few years ago an incomplete cop chiffer's work sold at auction for four hundred and twentyfive dollars, but there were only four parts to this set and they ha been rebound in two volumes, also this sct lacked thirty-fou specimens of paper ‘The rescarches of Jacob Christian Schiffer were evidently considered of importance at the time, for in 1770, or even befor Schiffer's work was completed, lhuc1ppc1r:d in Amsterdam book regarding his experiments. This book;? almost rarer than th Regensburg edition, comprises 32 pages of text, and one hand-coloured engraving of various forms of vegetation, including cat-tails carthmoss, and "wilde wyngaard." There are cightcen specimen of paper, which embrace sheets made from netdles, straw, carthmoss, cat-tails, and aloe le n the cighteenth century, as may be seen from the foregoin works, e was considerable research and interest in finding ne material, other than rags, from which to make paper. While ther were numerous specimens of papers which had been made fro newly-discovered materials, the books of the scientists who ha made the discoveries, were printed \Apon paper fabricated fro linen and cotton rags. It was not until 178 that a book was printe upon paper in which one of the new mmlcn.lls was used throughout. This was a tiny bookof 156 pages, printed in London, comprising the works of Charles Michel de Villete (1736-1793), an <o upon paper of the latter variety, and while the pages are a litl discoloured the paper is crisp and well-preserved.
