Show 6 PAPERMAKIN than I had imagined! In a short time I was able to produce a reliable new sort of paper. After such success, how could I forbear t make new and again new experiments? -especially when the cos of the tools and the studying of the process had already been met 1 decided, therefore, to make these experiments my regular winte occupation. T could do 5o the more readily since the paper mad hitherto found the warmest acknowledgment and I was urged t continue my experiments. In making the specimens for his books Doctor Schiffer frequently found that the same plant, collected at different times gave different results, which is evident in an examination o specimens. Experiments were made in the use of potatoes fo p and the insides of this tuber. However when the good Doctor was carrying out his researches in the us of potatoes he could not that year (1767) procure enough of thes vegetables for his work. In fact, potatoes were 5o little known i his country at that time that Doctor Schiffer felt that he need e plain their use and wrote the following regarding them: "Th carth-apple (potato) is a kind of plant known principallyin Voigtland, France, Austria, and since some years also in Bavaria an the Pfalz, on whose fibrous roots there are produced, in the carth known as earth-apples. These carth-apples arc an uncommonl useful vegetable for the kitchen and for all housekeeping, particularly where there is a scarcity of bread. Poor people in many place not only really eat these carth-apples, but the appetite is satisfie by them as well as by bread. c n my collection are bound cach volume scparately, in the original full calf with gold-toole backs.
