Show -13- has not, at any time, made any threats or issued any ultimatums. It would not be in keeping with the dignity of the State of Arizona and the justness of Arizona's position does not require it. We have assured our sister states, and we again reiterate, that it is our earnest wish that a just compact be arrived at between these states. The question is one between the states of the Southwest, and those acquainted with the conditions of this section are better able to settle these differences than any other group of men or agency. However, we will say this to the Legislature, that if at the end of the six months period such a compact has not been made, the Attorney General and the Commission will not be found unprepared, but will be ready to act and, we believe, act as the situation demands. A word in reference to the finances of the Commission. When the Commission took office on February 4th, there was transferred to the new Commission $16,248.63. After taking office the Commission paid outstanding bills against the old Commission amounting to $662.11. There has been presented one bill, which is not yet approved, amounting to $3,100.00. This left a balance for the present Commission of $12,486.52. Our Santa Fe conference, together with engineering advice and legal advice which we have incurred, will approximate $5,000.00, which will leave in the fund at the present time $7,486.52 to continue the work laid out for us. We will need money to carry on, but we feel that there should be no hysteria in the matter of appropriation. In our opinion, if the Legislature appropriates $50,000.00 it will be ample to carry on the work of this Commission, not only for the Conference but also this would cover and take care of the expenses of the Attorney General, and any |
