Show -21- Their records in those beautiful colors That will not fade, Mountains will wear away, but you will Ever grow wider, deeper and grander. Grand Canyon, you belong to the world For you are truly the sepulchre and The Historian of time; And on the rim rock of your open book I would stamp the word eternity/ I have read to you the Rim Rock of Eternity, as I think it a most fitting tribute and should help you realize the importance of the ratification of the Colorado River Compact. When you realize that it has taken the Colorado River and its tributaries a million ages to wear, grind, carry and build up an empire like Yuma and Imperial Valley with a soil not excelled anywhere under the sun; and while it was doing that it ground and wore a channel, deep enough if damned to control its flood waters and if harnessed to furnish power to irrigate not only the land it has builded, but thousands of acres that have never known its magic touch, with a reserve of horse power to move the wheels of industry in this great Southwest, that will change the name of the Silvery Colorado to the Colorado of gold. But nature can do no more, unless disgusted at our selfishness and petty politics, which threaten a delay, destroys an empire that has taken her countless ages to build. And I warn you that unless the Democrats assembled here mark their passing through by writing their records not on the walls of Grand Canyon, but across Grand Canyon, on a concrete filled dam, others of 1925 will. |
