The Professor did; not return the c a l l a t once, because as he entered the house, his friend xas watching the afternoon news, and i t xas depicting scenes of the s t r i k e . His friend, a painter (his l a s t txro v i s i t s xrere xrith painters) xas laughing at the scene of students marching onto the campus, the police marching in a f t e r them and escorting thorn off. The students xrere shown shouting and taunting the police. For the f i r st tiem, the Professor saw the situation in a comic l i g h t . Partly, he thought, i t xas because he xas seeing i t through his friend's eyes, partly because he xas so far axay from the scene. For a moment, they flashed a picture of the faculty marching xrith their picket signs before the Humanities Building, and the humor drained axay. By the time he returned the Director's c a l l , the Director had again l e f t his office. The Professor xas relieved, and t h i s time he l e f t no other number to c a l l , but told the secretary simply to say he had called. |
