Show -394- The genial tone had returned to the doctor's voice. "Thank you for reminding me." He picked up the Professor's f i l e and studied i t. "Good," he said. "I see you've lost another five pounds." What the doctor was trying to hide, the Professor thought, was the fact that the psychiatric problem had been his main concern a l l along. The examination of his eyes, the removal of the bandage, a l l these had been disguises, a means of broaching the question of psychiatric help. He thought this as the doctor was piercing the end of his index finger with a small blade and squeezing out a drop of blood onto a small s t r i p of paper. He placed a cotton wad over the wound and told the Professor to hold i t there for a few minutes. This was a procedure familiar to both of them. The doctor waved the s t r i p of paper in the a i r , then peered a t i t for a moment. "Fine," he said, ^ust fine." The doctor had also forgotten to take the Professor's blood pressure, something he always did a t the beginning of the examination. The Professor waited to see if he would remember, and when he d i d n ' t , he didn't remind him. All he wanted now was to get out of this small room. "Come for another t e s t next month," the doctor said as he went out the door. The Professor nodded, but did not speak |
