Show -151- Chanter Eleven A telephone c a l l from his wife's brother-in-law got the Professor and his wife out of bed early. He said the doctor had decided to operate? The Professor's wife said she would get down there as soon as she could. The Professor offered to drive her? but she said, no, she would take the bus? He could either drive her down the h i l l to the local bus-stop, or she could take the car and park i t there u n t i l she came back. Since i t was uncertain how long she would be gone, they decided i t would be b e t t e r for him to drive the car to the bus-stop? He could then come back and spend the day at his writing, as he had planned? Unspoken was the thought underlying a l l they did say? What would happen if her s i s t e r did not survive the operation? They t r i e d not to think of t h i s p o s s i b i l i t y ? His wife said she would telephone as soon as there was anything definite to t e l l him? They did not t a l k a t a l l on the way down the h i l l . As_ he l e t her out of the car before the l i t t l e make-shift depot, he kissed her on the cheek and said he hoped everything would be a l l right? She repeated again that she would l e t him know? He left? then?1 making a U-turn in front of the super-market across from the depot just as the bus drove up and stopped. He paused a t the curb u n t i l he saw her head appear through one of the bus windows, then he drove oh? |
