Show -54- Early in the morning, while the Professor was s t i l l sleeping? his wife sent for a doctor from the village? He came on his bicycle and administered p e n i c i l l i n . He called ttfiat the Professor had, pleuresy. For several days, the doctor came morning and evening and administered the medicine. One day he came and found a partially-smoked cigarette on the tray by the couch where the Professor was lying? He pointed to the cigare t t e and began to laugh? "Oh-ho," he said? "I see you a r e feeling better." This was different from the l a s t doctor the Professor had had in Europe.1 When the doctor in Genoa saw the f i r s t ciga r e t t e by the Professor's bed? he shook his finger in the Professor's face? "I t r y to get you well? so you can get on ship. What do you do? You work against me? I find another cigarette? you no get on ship. I t e l l them." In bed now, the Professor did not c h i l l had he had expected? Instead? he developed a sharp pain in his chest that hurt each time he took a breath? He a l s o began to cough, and then the pain became so intense that he could not help moaning. His friend? who had gone to bed in the mask room, came in to see i f there was anything he could do to help. "No?" the Professor told him.1 "The medicine should begin to work soon."
