A few of the taller buildings xrere s t i l l under construction: the Hilton Tower, Saint Francis Tower, and the Transamerica Pyramid, I t xas a solid, peaceful scene, belying the events that the Professor had witnessed on the University campus. Even noxr-deserted Alcatraz squatted formidably in the center of the bay. Even the sloxr moving xrhite sailboats seemed devoid of human l i f e. Even the ships, docked or anchored, in the area below the Bay Bridge, lay as though sleeping. The Berkeley Hills across the Bay were dormant. The only real movement xas a small ferry, bobbing along toxard Tiburon, and a black freighter plowing the waves beneath the bridge, just noxr moving into view. The Professor xatched i t as though mesmerized. His mind unreeled to the times he had traveled this way through the narroxr channel. Once xrhen he had returned from teaching in the summer session a t the University of Hawaii; again xrhen he had completed his t r i p around the world. How near the shores had seemed from the decks of the txro large steamers; how far axay they appeared today. Sitting here was peaceful, and i t had a calming affect on the Professor, but i t xas getting him nowhere. He decided to drive doxm to Sausalito. He had lived in Sausalito his first |
