Seeing i t drive axay, a short, dark g i r l , who had been eating inside, rushed out to say she had a friend xrho had not yet arrived. "She has a class this period in the Humanities Building," she told the Professor. '.'She asked me to t e l l you - to be sure she d i d n ' t get l e f t ." The Professor xas surprised to hear that there were s t i ll classes being conducted on the campus. In his oxm mind, the classrooms stood empty. Two more students arrived, xalking up Junipero Serra, and the Professor told them to go xrith the driver of the second car, who was just noxr coming out of the diner. He looked again at his xatch. It was noxr ten minutes to the hour, time for the missing student to be getting out of her class. "You go on," he told the driver of the second car.
