Show -165- Chapter Twelve A/&Y' As the Professor drove to the campus the rfrrr rfttfhim thr /N A he kept the car radio on as usual. It was the noon hour, and traffic along Nineteenth Avenue was heavy, so he missed several of the set lights. His mind was divided three ways: by the demands of the traffic, by the voice of the announcer, and by something within himself that told him today would not be a good time to be at the university. He remained in the fast lane as usual. He would switch to the middle lane as he approached Sloat Boulevard, then to the right at Stonestown, preparing for the right turn into Holloway Avenue. The last report the announcer had said that there were no police on campus, but that the students were demonstrating on the quadrangle and in front of the administration Building. He decided that as he drove by the front of the campus, he would check for the sight of police, and if they were there he would drive right past, *l& into Park Meroed, turn around, and return home. All was quiet at the entrance to the campus. Between buildings, he could see a mass of students, but no police. He turned right down Holloway Avenue toward the parking lot. The gate to the lot was clear. Even the grumpy little attendant who checked the cars was no more or less disgruntled than |
