He had been s e t t l e d in Ankara only a few weeks, when a l e t t e r from a colleague in the Midwest warned him that the Director was out to get even. His plan, i t appeared, was to bring about a withdraxal of the subsidy that the University had granted to a s s i s t the Professor's magazine. The case the Director xas making xas the money could better be spent by increasing the scholarship fund for graduate students. Thinking back on his past now, the Professor suddenly realized that the most intense emotional experiences of his l i f e , at least the most destructive, had been caused by frustration. In Ankara, the frustration could only be relieved by writing the Head of the Department, reporting what he had heard, and complaining a t the idea that anything of this kind could be accomplished during his absence. The Head wrote back accusing the Professor of Paranoia and promising him that nothing would be done concerning the magazine while he was away. Two days l a t e r , a l e t t e r arrived from the Dean announcing that the subsidy had been withdrawn. "What do you do now?" his wife had asked him. "Nothing," the Professor had replied. "Have you ever heard of a dean's decision, once announced, being overturned?" |
