Show -286- Chapter Twenty The weather was not quite as cold the next morning as the Professor prepared to leave, but the wind on the patio xas almost as strong as it had been yesterday at the beach. The Professor dressed even more warmly, which was not easy after ten years In California. He wore a wool suit, and he brought a winter overcoat out of storage that he had xrorn only on trips to Europe and once when he had gone to Utah at Christmas time. He took the same Basque beret that he had worn the day before. As he drove, his mind kept dwelling on the conclusion of yesterday's excursion. The food at Les deux Frere had been exceedingly good, and they had drunk another bottle of wine with the meal? His wife, as she often had in the past, became more affectionate as the evening progressed. On the drive home, he had had to caution himself about the driving, because both he and his wife seemed impelled by a strong urgency to get home and get quickly into bed. Their love-making had been fine and complete, something that happened more and more seldom these days. Their ages had something to do with it, the Professor knew, but he also seemed more and more preoccupied, and she often reluctant, so that it became more and more difficult to discover the proper time, as they had last night. |
