Students who had been attracted by it, arrived late for his class? and there was no aoubt that all students were distracted - some even fearful? so that they did not appear for class at all? The Professor had been exhilarated by it, but what pleasure he felt was also tinged with something like fear for the consequences? As he left his office after class and walked back down across the Quadrangle to his? parking lot, all was again quiej|t. A few students moved along the path to the library? others toward their classrooms? A few sat on benches before the Commons? drlnkling coffee or coke. There was little evidence of the passion that had been so liberally displayed a few hours earlier? The Speaker's Platform sat spare and unoccupied? like an empty classroom. One of the mongrel dogs always disporting here ran up to it, lifted his leg? then turned and smelled what he had discharged? As the Professor drove up toward Tw|in Peaks? the only tension remaining came from the need to decide whether to drop off his granddaughter's birthday present and then drive directly back to Marin County? or to stay and visit with his daughter's family until the rush hour traffic had subsided?
