Show -107- man, a flurry of hands had gone up, and several members had leaped to their feet. One was acknowledged, then another and another? Some speakers were angry. Some attempted to be reasonable. None reflected the kind of urgency the two senators had suggested. Such urgency, the Professor thought, was too new to them? He had seen some of them more upset at a question of reorganizing the department, when, he thought, they felt threatened by a possible loss of personal prestige or position? Today, they did not like what was happening, but they had no idea hox* to deal with the problem. Some of them spoke vaguely about standing behind the President. Others were angry at the threats to bring the police on campus. One said the students should have more say in the construction of the curriculum. Another replied that this would mean a lowering of standards. A Journalism instructor seated -ro next i&e the Professor muttered: "Double the campus police, and let them crack heads." The Professor watched the hands of the clock behind the Chairman move ever closer to noon, and his inward groan grew into a stomach ache of despair. The meeting was going nowhere. He wished he had stayed home. He wished he had never taken this position in California. He wished he had not got into teaching in the first place. In fact, he wished none of these things. They were an ex-pression oi disgust and a measure of the frustration he felt. When he saw the Chairman make a move as though to dismiss the |
