This letter is to notify you of such delinquency. In the event your dues are not paid within sixty (60) days of this notice, I am bound by the by-laws of our association to submit your name to the governing board for termination of membership. However, ato avoid further action, please remit the sum of $1>.00 within sixty (60) days. Very sincerely, EDWIN J. POND 5ecretary Intermountain Ski Instructors Association TO: BOD ISlA FROM: Dave Parkinson, Secretary RE: Sec. Report As most of you are aware, I assumed the responsibility of Secretary after the resignation of Mr. Ray Van Dongen last fall. Max asked me to help out as there was not a permanent appointee due to the slJort notice given by Ray. The appointment was to be a temporary one and it is my intention at this time to resign the position of Secretary so that the new President can appoint a permanent individua 1. I've always enjoyed working for the association and appreciate the opportunity of serving for one yea r i.n this capacity. I will look forward to serving as a commi.ttee chairman or i.n any other capacity as needed. The office of Secretary and Executive Secretary during the year processed the following: Certification Exam Applications Registered Applications Membership Processed New Members Processed Compensation The Association census is: Full Certified Associate Certi fied Retired Honorary Total Members Registered Total 1969-70 72 111 401 $656 1969-70 173 239 7 4 423 159 582 1968-69 114 107 433 40 $768 1968-69 167 213 7 2 389 74 463 I would like to take this opportunity to thank our executive secretary, Mary Ellen. She has put in many hours and has done us all favors without any regard to her own time or compensation. Her affiliation with DuMac is extremely beneficial. I wold like to recommend to the board that in the future anyone who becomes executive secretary should be very familiar with our members if possible and know how the association functions. There are so many small problems that she contends with that only a skier or someone familiar with us could handle. The office of Secretary has been very well set up, and with most of the work being done by the executive secretary, does not require much time anymore. The new secretary shouldn't have any prob lem assumming his duties. Respectfully submitted, Dave Parkinson, Secretary Intermountain Ski Instructors Assoc. ~{!?~ /~ t.JS. FROM: Clark Parkinson, Convention Publicity Chairman SUBJECT: 17th Annual Convention Publicity As part of our convention promotion, we have made arrangements with KUTV, Channel 2, News Department to have four one-and-one-half minute "special feature" spots on the 6: 20 P.M. sports program. The spots will run Monday through Thursday, April 17, 18, 19 and 20. The first three shows will be centered around the convention and how to become a ski teacher, ski school clinics and certification preparation, certification examinations and the fourth will be a re-cap of the first three programs. The primary purpose of these programs is to announce our convention and in general inform the people of the ski teaching profession and what the Association does to insure the people of qualified ski teachers. We felt is important to advise you of these programs so you could tune in if possible. Ski Instructor's Certification Examination was held. Twelve instructors attended and ten candidates for Standard Certification. All of the instructor's attending felt that the Clinic was well organized, interesting, and will prove to be valuable to them during the course ot this year' 8 instructional programs. Considerable emphasis was placed on the Modern Austrian teaching techniques. Karl Hinderman and Bob Beck conducted clinics pertaining to this technique as it applies to instruction and racing. The presentations were made as they, the school directors make them. All controversial discussionS" were left for the evening meetings. Gu~ Gnebm gave an excellent resume' of the Arlberg technique, in which he was assisted by Dave Hamilton and Jim Thornhill. Of the ten cendidates for certification, all chose the Arlbera, or Modified Arlberg techniques for their presentation. Tbo€e receiving Standard Classification at this clinic were George M:>ntrose, Bozeman; "Cod" Carrier, Dutte; and Hal Erickson, Helena. Many of the others came wi thin one or tvo tractional points of achieving certification. The candidate was asked to outline a teaching procedure. Free skiing is also graded. Nationally, more emphasis is being placed on this aspect of certification than has been in the past. Also, the candidates were given a vritten test governing knowledge of' ski association organization; and knowledge of skiing terminology and techniques. Generally, the grades in this were passing. There has been some criticism of our pre-certification policies. These, as you can well imagine will need some time to be workod. over to thn point 'Where they can be mutual.ly acceptable to the candidat~ for certification. We at the present time, can notify the prospective candidate at least one month in advance ot the certification time and place. We can only emphasize as complete a knowledge as possible to the candidate on skiing techniques, equl~ment, teaching techniques, teaching presentation, cless organization; and a degree of ski1ng proficiency of their own. We cannot outline '1 strict set of critct'ia f(~t' certification because of the individual variations insk11ng syles and teaching approaches. You can realize the difficulties inherent in trying to create a number of teaching conformists. We can however set standards, which everyone, even the candidate, feels should be high. A thorough study of Bill Lash's Manual, Ski Teaching Methods should_give every prospective candidate all the necessary backgroun~successtully pass~ test) exclusive of skiing ability. ();Ipies of this manual can he obtained by writing to me and enclosing a check for $3.20 to cover manual, 8lld mailing expenses. Upon reading and studying the manual you will notice the amount of latitude that is given to the individual skier's and instructor's preferences and techniques. All secretaries of NRMSA ski clubs are receiving a copy ot this bulletin. It 11 ho:ped that the above information can bepa.ssed Along to -the prospective certification candidates. The next. Instructor Examina.tion will be held in Missot;l& ()n the week end ot J811., 31st. Also that a8 of November 28th, 1958 no more amateur ratings be issued, and that as of Fa.l.l certification examination in 1959 the M1ateur rating be discontinued. $30.00 from club treasur7 vill be ellocated toward sending a represen ·~.ative to the Na.tional Ski Instructor's Clinic at Arapahoe Basin in May.
