CORTLANDT HILL'S SECRETARY AS' THE' ONE MAN WHO CAN POSS I BLE' HELP ME ." MY PROBLEM CONCERNS THE NEWLY ORGANIZED INTERMOUNTAIN SKI INSTRUCTORS ASSOCIATION. , WE CONSIDER THE rWSIA AS THE LEADING ORQANIZATION or ITS KINO IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES. YOUR GROUP HAS DONE A GREAT DEAL TO RAISE THE STANDARDS OF THE SKI INSTRUCTOR AND TO PROMOTE SKI INSTRUCTION IN THE EYES OF THE SKIING PUBLIC. I KNOW THAT THE INTERMOUNTAIN SKI INSTRUCTOR'S STANDARDS HAVE BEEN VERY LOW--PROBABLY THE LONEST IN THE NATION.:'I THINK YOU WILL AGREE THAT THE INTERMOUNTAIN REGION HAS SOME WONDERFUL SKI AREAS, AND' iT COULD'::'~ . CERTAINLY USE SOME SKI INSTRUCTION pROMOTION. AS HEAD OF THE FWSIA, YOU MUST REALIZE SOME OF THE PROBLEMS I AM fACED WITH. THE RESULTS OF YOUR SPLENOID EffORTS ARE EVIDENT. THEREfORE, I fEEL THAT YOU COULD GIVE ME SOME WORTHY ADVICE. THIS ORGANIZATION IS IN ITS SECOND YEAR or OPERATION AND LITTLE HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED. THE LAST YEAR'S PRESIDENT WAS TO WRITE YOUR ORGANIZATION fOR A COpy OF YOUR CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS, BUT HE 010 NOT. HE WAS TO USE THIS AS A BASIS fOR A CONSTITUTION Of OUR OWN. I WOULD LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH THIS PROJECT. If AVAILABLE, COULD YOU SEND ME A COpy Of THESE BY-LAWS AND ARTICLES OF INCORPORATION? YOU" PERSONAL COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS WILL ALSO BE APPRECIATED. AT PRESENT THE ISlA IS STILL IN THE FORM OF A SUBSIDERARY GROUP DIRECTLY UNDER A COMMITTEE Of THE PARENT GROUP, THE INTERMOUNTAIN SKI ASSOCIATION. ALTHOUGH WE HAVE CONTROL OVER SO~ POLICIES AND THE fUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES, WE 00 NOT HAVE CONTROL OVER THE REVENUE TAKEN IN fROM CERTifiCATION fEES. 00 YOU SUGGEST A COMPLETE BREAK fROM THE pARENT GROUP, OR WOULD YOU SUGGEST ONLY TO GET THESE fUNDS OUT Of THEIR BUDGET. I FEEL THAT THE ISA IS A GROUP Of AMATEUR SKIERS OeGANIZED TO BETTER THE SPaRl AS A WHOLEtrAND THE SKI INSTRUCTORS ARE A PROfESSIONAL GROUP ORG NIZED TO BE ER THEIR PROfESSION. 2 t-fR. BOB BRELSfORD JANUARY 28, '952 THEREfORE, THE TWO GROUPS HAVE AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT fUNCTION. wr HAVE fifTY CERTifIED INSTRUCTORS. THIS HAS BROUGHT IN INCOME THAT COULD BE USED fOR SUCH PURPOSES AS ADVERTISiNG AND PAYMENT fOR OUTSIDE EXAMINE~5. ouR ENTIRE onGANfZATION IS ANXIOUS TO SEE THE SKI INSTRUCTORS Of ALL ASSOCIATIONS ORGANIZED tiNDER A NATIONAL fEDERATION. WE' ARE' WILL1NG TO DO ANYTHING WE CAN TO HELP PROMOTE THIS PROJECT. IN ANY CASE, WE WOULD LIKE TO aECOME CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE fAR WESTERN SK I INSTRUCTORS.· YOll CAN BE Of GREAT HELP TO ME, BOB, AND I WOULD APPRECIATE' YOUR ASSISTANCE. S. and Its Evolution Towards a Plan of National Affiliation of Certified In~tructor8; dated July 9, 1952, togather with your letter of July 28, received here August 4. I have perused this report briefly last evening and am transmitting it to Mr. Merritt Cook, 5214 Irving Park Road, Chicago 41, Illinois, the new president of the Central Ski Association. May I compliment you on the excellent and int eresting format ot this report. I believe that you have done an outstanding job of presenting your plan. We, in the Central, have been quite interested in this matter, and it has been the subject of considerable discussion. It it would be possible, I know that there are a number of us in the Central who would appreciate having copies of this report. I am transmitting this copy to Mr. Cook today, so that he may act on this as soon as possible. One word of caution, I hope that you and your associates do not move into a situation whereby you establish a separate organization or corporation distinct from the N.S.A. Our recent experience in a organizational way has made the N.S.A. quite conscious of its component parts and how they relate to the N.S.A. I am sure though, from the excellent work that you and your cormnittee have done, that you will avoid this pitfall. I am particularly pleased to note the close relation you feel that the National Council of Ski Instructors should have with the National Ski Association. I personally think the most good can be obtained in this way. In regard to some publicity about this report, it occurs to me that an article on this subject would be quite worthwhile in our coming American Ski Annual e The report itself is quite long, but possibly this material and idea could be condensed to an article of about 2,000 words. I don't know whether you feel this could be done, but I would be most anxious to have you make a good try at it. As we are now working on the Ski Annual, I would need to have this material within about three weeks time. Will you kindly advise me if it will be possible for you to do this as I am very anxious to assist in every way possible that suitable publicity is given. At Est~s Park, you will recall I was a member of Ithe speCial committee appointed by President Fred Be~mar, ,to' study'the _prob~em oj' Na-tio~(I,l Certificati on oj ' S}n Ins(;ructors. 'La~y Br~ggs, as ChaH'man, conducted a very "interesting and productive meeting of'that committee. Present Were Bill Lash, Phil Clerk, Jr., Gordy S7ren, 8epp Ruschp, Bob Law, Toni Matt, Fiil1y Schae//ler, John Litchfield, and Junior·Bounous. My presence on the committee, as a representative -Of the Central delegation, was purely accidental, since T ,- " ," had'no past association with ski p~ofessioncerti!ication. ,However, because in the last iiJteen :years Ilve spent over a ',-rf;housand dollars for my own nnd my famiLy's ski ins tru,c"f; ion, - and since--I'm particu1ar_Iy interested in Junior skiing, I 'at-st'~med·' intently en,' I was impressed. To l!:hat I learned at ~hat meeting and, in discussions with Phil Clark, Jr. and Bill Lash"later,"'I -added (;,11 the impressions -I have picir.ed up in my" .conversations with ski pro/essionGJls from .-the Cochands and Rybiskas in the LrLU7'en-tians 1;0 the Iselin.s, the Engens and others in our own west. And then Bill Lashes very fine recent brochure, "Progress'Report on the jJevelopmenf, of the Nat i onal Covnc il of ,S'ki Instructors of ilmeri ca, s ummari 2es the factuaL! history of thc development of the &ki Inctructors Associations in the Jour Western Divisions of the N.G'.A. Dear Bill: OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT ::>epternber 10, 1952. You probably did not think it would take me (6) weeks to survey and digest your report concerning the National COilllcil of Ski Iustructors of .America. However, it did just that. You arE:: to bo commended in giving to the Association for approval such a fine comprehensive report. It shows a tremendous amount of thought, study and reseE!rch. When approved, I feel this plan will be a great advUDceJ:J.cnt in the overall picture of skiing in America. From a National point of view the plan is not self supporting, however if the mecha-nics can be worked out thru the Divisions to be so, I have no criticisms. At our next Board Heeting to be held in Los Angeles October 12th, we will cowlcil your report lor further study and reconunendations. Final action should than be made by 15th February '53. If this action is too late a date for you, please advise. ccl Totl1t11i Tindall Otto Steiner Flo Schenck ; October 16, 1952 Big Bear Lake, Callf. Mr. Bill Lash President Inter-Mountain Ski Instr. It seems satisfactory to set aside $5.00 for successful applicants to defray certification expenses of the divlsions. However, we wl11 not act on thls proposal until next Spring. Btll Lash - Page 2 - Oct. 16, 1952 4. The Certification Committees of the N.S.A. and its Divisions shall prepare a teaching outline to be approved by the Divisional and National Instructors Organizations. This outline should be st~ndQrdlzed, constantly amended, and should ultimately cover all stages of ski teachingfbeginntng t-~ 'bno ,intermediate and advanced ~ To simp ify the task a teaching outline for teaching beginners should be the first Objective. 5. The Instructors Orgunizations shall produce standardized simplified examination and test procedures which are genera\ly acceptable and are based on the experiences ofS~ay ski instructors examination boards in the Untted States and abroad. As soon QS you will have completed your organization as a non-profit corporation, we should proceed with co-ordinating our organizational program with the P.S.N.A., N.R.M.S.A., and S.R.M.S.A. Likewise, we should write to our Eastern and Midwestern COlleagues to set themselves up in a similiar fashion so that all seven groups can be represented in the Council on an equal basis. Inasmuch as the next meeting is in New York, we should meet~e or two days prior to the National Convention; and if none of our Western Instructors ASSOCiates can send any representattve, we should have Ii western Meeting of the Council, prior to the N.S.A. Convention, during which meeting the National Ski Association would be founded. I propose that such a meetlng should coincide with the annual convention of either yours or our organization. It ls, therefore, of great importance to decide early where our meeting will be held, to send out notices to all western Instructors Organizations; and the burden of dolng just that falls upon you and me. If you will handle the organization of your own group and the remaining three Western DiviSions, I will arrange for the over-all meeting, and the organization of the Central and Western Divisions. William Lash 814 ~ast South Temple street Salt Lake City, Utah Dear Mr. Lash: 0ctober b, 1~~2 This letter will serve to officially appoint you as a member of the NSA Certification of Ski Teachers Committee for the coming year. I know of your sincere interest in this activity and trust that you will accept this appointment to handle this very important work of the Association. You may be aware that many of last year's NSA committees were inactive and did little or nothing to promote the aspects of the sport as represented by their committee. In appointing COmmittees and committee cha.irmen this year, I am making every effort to avoid the possibility of a recurrence of this situation. I trust that in serving on the above-named committee tha.t you will do everything within your power to promote this activity, not only in your local area and divisional association, but that you will keep in mind that as a member of an NSA committee your primary responsibility in this regard is at the National level. I hope to be able to publish, in the near future, a complete N0A COlll11ittee list, a copy of which you w:i 11 roce:5vtt 1n due courttc'.
