FROM: SUBJECT: "Progress Ski Instructors of America" A short time ago, most of you received a letter from t~rogress Ski Instructors of America" asking for your proxy to be used at the annual P.S.I.A. General Meeting to be held in Toronto September 13, 1969. "Progress Ski Instructors of Americatt appears to be a group of people who have aligned themselves for the purpose of politically taking control of P.S.I.A. in order to implement some changes in the organizational structure in the interest of tlprogress". Please note that your division president, Mr. Lundberg, is one of these people. Also please note that Keith Lange, who is not currently a member, and Bill Haskins, who has never been a member, also appear as people who are interested in changing flour" organization. These individuals have asked for your proxy vote to place three new men on the P.S.I.A. B.O.O.--Jim Riley, President R.M.S.I.A.; Bill Lenihan, President P.N.S.I.A.; and Bill Morrow, President U.S.E.A.S.A. These three, if elected, will be dedicated to changing the structure of P.S.I.A. from a membership of fully Certified individuals to a membership of all division members--Certified, Associate, and registered members. This is their primary objective, and this is also their primary claim to "progresslt • We (the undersigned) would like to call to your attention that P.S.I.A. in the past eight and one half years has been progressive in spite of its supposedly dominant leadership. As you know, two manuals have been written and distributed. Three Interski teams have been fielded, and one Interski has been hosted. By way of these vehicles, the United States has become internationally recognized and repected entity in the ski instruction field. 2 Of course, during this short period of time, some mistakes have been made. l>Pl However, by proceeding cautiously with a basic technique, not quick to follow fads, P.S.I.A. finds itself( )at the international level. We feel that changes must be made, but we also feel that they must be carefully made by people who have a background of experience and the best possible stature in the business. We feel that the type of leadership that P.S.I.A. has experienced since its inception has been progressive and that with the same type in the future, the organization will remain solid yet be progressive. We appreciate j::Ju~ the value of new ideas and young leadership. However, ~e must be correlated with the foundations already laid. To sacrifice the experience and stature of Willy Schaeffler, Herbert Schneider, and Hal Kihlman, at this time, would be very poor judgment. Please consider these facts very carefully before you commit your proxy vote to anyone. It appears that if you sign your proxy to the President of I.S.I.A., he will vote it-according to the "Progress Ski Instructors of America's" recent letter-for the three new B.O.D. candidates. However, if you wish your vote to go for the present P.S.I.A. B.O.D. members who are up for re-election, who have proven themselves to be "progressive", and if you have confidence in the present P.S.I.A. vUL !+u.:') .:£c./' tJ'2 ;tuo.;JJ.{"~rz.._ officers, commit your vote to either the P.S.I.A. President, I Ii .:;:31 _~-i~41. ~ Lorenz. It should be noted here that the I.S.I.A. B.O.D. approved expenses for Phil Jones and Max Lundberg to attend the P.S.I.A. meeting in Toronto. We (the undersigned) who have participated in and evolved with ski instructor organizations have distributed this letter in the interest of continuing sound and constructive leadership within P.S.I.A. at our own personal expense. 1706 Oak street South Pasadena, Calif Dear Bill: , I'm terribly sorry this didn t get off sooner ••..•• nobody in SoCalif had any inkle that our season was just beginning ••... President, As a member of PSIA and as Chairman of TCC I would like to ask for you to come up with a chart of organisation. The chart then ,,'ould enab I e us to work more efficient ly and eliminate confusion as far as communication is concerned. It would be useful to equip the hoard, work committees and menbership wi th SUd1 a organisational chart and thus improove our relation. The chart might also he complemented with job discriptions for each individual involved, fields of responsibility and report ohligations. Perhaps a specific year and or 5 year plan can be requested from all workcommittees and PSIA as an organisation at large. My second request is concerning attendance of the meeting of the International Ski 111structors Association. Although the elates have not he en set, I 'I'ould like to ask permission to attend the meeting ill Chamonix this spring. I have sent a letter to the secretary Prof. Unger indicating our sincere wish, that the meeting serve to more than a telling each other what is ne,,' in ones country and hOh' demonstartion forms are executed, hut to get down to the necessities of our job: ski teaching- methodology. Recalling the remark of Karl Gammas during our last meeting I would like to see }lr. Juris Vagneur attend this international meeting as well. Gamma at that time indicated, that the US is ahead in regards of Biomechanics, and that a specialist in this field migbt be brought in. In my letter to the secretary I do mention the possibility of hringing Vagneur, although the cost or at least a part of it h'ould have to be covered hy the international organisation. This work comes to you through your membership in PSIA. Its value far exceeds your yearly dues. It is intended to be a working manual which you should study. It is not a finished product. The computation of the material is largely the effort of Horst Abraham, Chairman of our Technical Committee. The reason it's being made available to the membership at this time is so you can become familiar with the important changes and improvements which are described and share in its further development. As Horst says in his preface, the committee wants your "comments and suggestions" • You'll have the opportunity to see demonstrations at this year's annual PSIA Convention in Vail in April. You'll be able to ski with the demonstrators and take part in offthe- hill discussions. Most of us feel we are in the midst of a skiing revolution. Report As most of you are aware, I assumed the responsibility of Secretary after the resignation of Mr. Ray Van Dongen last fall. Max asked me to help out as there was not a permanent appointee due to the s~ort notice given by Ray. The appointment was to be a temporary one and it is my intention at this time to resign the position of Secretary so that the new President can appoint a permanent indi.vidual. I've always enjoyed worki.ng for the association and appreciate the opportunity of serving for one year in this capacity. I wi 11 look forward to serving as a committee chairman or in any other capacity as needed. The office of Secretary and Executive Secretary during the year processed the following: Certification Exam Applications Registered Applications Membership Processed New Members Processed Compensation The Association census is: Full Certified Associate Certified Retired Honorary Total Members Registered Total 1969-70 72 ' 111 401 $656 1969-70 173 239 7 4 423 159 582 1968-69 114 107 433 40 $768 1968-69 167 213 7 2 389 74 463 I would like to take this opportunity to thank our executive secretary, Mary Ellen. She has put in many hours and has done us all favors without any regard to her own time or compensation. Her ," 2- affiliation with DuMac is extremely beneficial. I wold 1 ike to recommend to the board that in the Future anyone who becomes executive secretary should be very familiar with our members iF possible and know how the association functions. There are so many small problems that she contends with that only a skier or someone familiar with us could handle. The offi.ce of Secretary has been very well set up, and with most of the work being done by the executive secretary, does not require much time anymore. The new secretary shouldn't have any problem assumming his duties. Respectfully submitted, Dave Parkinson, Secretary Intermounta in Ski Instructors Assoc. N .1<1 UNION 0' THI AMIIIICA. A ... I believe that you have stat~d fairly a problem which is probab~ affecting the leadership of other NSA national committees. The problem is that th~ national chairmen do not take advantage of the clerical and secretarial help which the national office is supposed to provide to its national committees. • ' . . In the past, service from National h~s obviously been faulty ~d was not conducive to encouraging and supporting the efforts of national chairmen, who wanted to do a good jop for the NSA. • I was lucky to learn of this dissatisfaction at Alta and ~ould like to erase this feeling among our national chairmen as soon as possible. Not only can this office help the Ski Teachers Committee, but we can also do much for the competition committees, by supplying all race f~I,',', S, and secondar.y materials for cl-ubs hosting n,";,a, ,tional championships. As you have stat'l' this office did sol~cit the national corrunitipes th~s year for work assignments thati; op.ld support the comrru.ttees. So far, only fa,#, coltDuttees have act.ed upon this, and. then the 1'1Ork request was light. ~~ .' • t ~1 The Ski Teachers Ce~tification Committee is one of the most L~pdrtant and valuable committees in the NSA. Its very existence is doing more for the recreational skier tpan most other committees designed to aid this segment of skiers. The National Certification Program could be administered through the NSA office, as far as administration and. clerical work is concerned •. The national chairman can work through this office much like our national president does. All that is needed is that a detailed outline from the Ski Teacher's Committee be prepared designating what th~ want. If this could be presented at the Milwaukee convention in time so that budget allotments could be made and so that I could be thoroughly conversant with this office's responsibilities, then maybe next fall the national program could be initiated from this office supporting the work of Lash's committee. The question of the mailing for Hart skis and the use of NSA letterhead will probably be answered by Bill. However, no national poli~ was violated, because the mailing was to ski instructors only and because the national committee, through Bill, asked that this be done. v.Jhether the other corrunittee members of the Ski Teachers Certification Committee feel this is correct, I do not know. However, this office is ready to support the work of your national conmittee, if your national committee wants its assistance. cc: Melville, Lash, NSA Board of Directors PNSA Examiners & Certification Committee PNSA Board of Directors CONTRIBUTIONS ARE DEDUCTIBLE FOR Cordially, FEDERAL INC'wWX;Xr;}. ~ai~s t ~ecutlve Secre ary " f~, ' . ::, .JUNIOR BOUNO~S ;~KI INCORPORATED 711 EAST' 32:cJO r'>J(JF'I1H PRO\)& ..•.
