BroadbentDebate Managerâ- The University forensic activities, debating, oratory, and extemporaneous speaking, come directly under the supervision of the debate council, elected by popular vote of the students. An unequalled year in varsity debate and oratory has just been completed. The achievements of the students participating in these intellectual activities have been largely the result of excellent coaching and careful policy forming. â- The Debate Council was composed of Dean W. H. Leary, of the Law School, who acted as chairman; Gail Plummer, of the speech department; La Verne Bane, debate coach, and the two student members, Hyrum Hendrickson, and Joseph R. Broadbent. â- The first action the Debate Council took was to appoint Joseph R. Broadbent, debate manager; Earl Ross, publicity director, and Ray Owen, freshman coach. However, there were some changes during the year. Omar Bunnell succeeded Ray Owen, and later because Bunnell didn't return for the spring quarter,Broadbent took over his duties as freshmen coach. â- The council sponsored several forensic trips to distant cities, where the debate team and public address aspirants brought honors to Utah. Trips were made to Bozeman, Montana; Oakland, California; Denver, Colorado; and several places in the state. Not only has the council directed the affairs of the varsity debate team, but it has had jurisdiction over women's and freshmen's debate teams, which have been very successful in their endeavors. â- The debate council feels that forensic affairs should have more consideration from the Deans' Council, and the Apportionment Board, so that they may develop better public minded students through competition with well-known debate teams on the Pacific Coast and in the East. This year the Deans' Council turned them down on a tour through California during the Christmas holidays, whereby they would have visited the different colleges.LearyBroadbentPlummerHendricksonBaneTwo Hundred Seventy-five |
