Show IKE J. ARMSTRONGHead Coachâ- To anyone so unfortunate as to not know Ike J. Armstrong we introduce the director of the University of Utah athletic department. H The ability to blend the varying personalities of hundreds of men into ideal team members requires the work of a sort of genius. This fact aloneâ€"understanding men â€" indicates the gradation of coaches. The size of a college is often not important in the production of top-notch teams. H In conformation with these requisites "Big Chief" Armstrong of the Redskin camp has a superb personality, a keen judgment, a sense of propriety, an extensive knowledge of his field, and is an ideal leader of men.Head Coachâ- University athletic officials effected a stroke of inestimable wisdom when, in 1925, they engaged Ike J. Armstrong, former ace Drake University athlete and assistant coach, to direct Redskin destinies. â- The consistency with which Armstrong produces championships appals coaches of competing colleges. After triumphing in every conference game for six consecutive grid seasons, the wily mentor directed his not-too-brilliant '33-'34 squad into a conference triple tie. â- By gaining top honors this season, the Utes placed the eighth football championship addition in nine years in the, already flourishing, Union Building trophy cases. â- With a dearth of first-place winners, Ike's tracksters built up enough "placing-points" to upset the erratic "dope bucket" and win their third R. M. C. cham-pionship in four years in the big track joust last spring. The C. A. C. nosed out Utah U the year previous in Salt Lake City. â- His hopes of winning his fourth R. M. C. track title in five years are exceedingly good right now. With such a formidable record, Coach Ike Armstrong has become a permanent and necessary fixture as head man in the Ute athletic department in the minds of all followers of Redskin athletic endeavors. â- Guiding team candidates for two major sports both in and out of season is a tremendous job, but Ike performs this function masterfully as well as acting as director of all of the University's competitive athletics. â- No coaching staff with Armstrong at the helm would be mediocre, yet the strength of the Ute staff is greatly augmented by Vadal Peterson, Sherman "Pete" Couch, Charles Welch, and T. S. Parmelee. One Hundred Seventy-tour |
