Gillespie closes his reign as commandant at the Univeristy of Utah at the completion of the school year 1934-35.Major Gillespie was assigned to this post to fill a term of four years, and, because of his extreme interest in the Regiment, he asked for three one - year extensions which he has now completed.Upon his departure, the Cadet Regiment wishes him the very best of luck.Army OfficersMajor James A. GillespieThe R.O.T.C. Regiment of Field Artillery at the University of Utah was led to a successful year by Major James A. Gillespie. The commandant has directed military tactics at the university for the past seven years. After plenty of hard work, he put the regiment where it is today. Utah is steadily becoming known for its efficiency In military training.Enrollment In R.O.T.C. department is left up 10 the discretion of the students. Prestige, honor, and opportunity are mainly the reasons who so many students enter this work, the goal being a commission as a second lieutenant in the Organized Reserve Corps of Field Artillery of the United States upon the completion of the four year training.The University of Utah Field Artillery Regiment is a member of the Ninth Corps Area along with Leland Stanford University and Oregon State College. Major Gillespie was assisted by assistant professors, Captain Melvin L. Craig, senior Instructor and pistol coach; Lieutenant Charles H. Swarrz, ath'etic officer and junior instructor; Lieutenant Karl W. Hisgen, adjutant and sophomore instructor; and Lieutenant Robert M.
