Success came not in titles or medals, but in the marked improvement exhibited by the group of inexperienced candidates that turned out at the beginning of the season. The dual meets with Brigham Young and Utah State brought defeats to Utah University in each event. In their first appearance against B. Y. U., defending division champion, the Redskins surprised by putting up a dogged resistance that left the issue undecided until the final match of the day, then losing only by the narrowest of margins. Against the Aggies a shifted lineup was returned losers. Four institutions entered grapplers in the Western Division meet at the "U" gymnasium. Having lost both dual meets, the Utes were accorded little chance of making a creditable showing against the division's best. At the outset it was clearly seen that the champions were not to be dethroned, and the race for points centered on the remaining honors. Two Redskins succeeded in winning individual titles. When the two-day meet closed the Youngsters were still reposing on their throne, while the Utes were taking second place. Comparative scores showed B. Y. U. with 30, Utah University 20, Utah State 19, and Montana State College 15. Captain Ralph Watson Page 273 |
