Show UTONIAN ... 1934 V Freshman Debating Exhibiting an enthusiasm and interest that has but rarely been shown, the freshman debate squad commenced work early in the school year with a membersip of some twenty aspiring frosh. Under the direction of Ray Owen, frosh debate coach, the squad engaged in intensive research into the war debt problem preparatory to tryouts for membership on the squad. As a result of the tryouts held late in January, the following members were chosen to represent Utah in all freshman debating contests for the year: Henry Pearson, Alva Greene, Marvin Bertoch, Ned Johnson, Elmer Young, Lewis Connell, Newman Crookston, Bryce Boyer, Don Cot-terell, Claudius Stevenson and Howard Anderson. Bertoch, Pearson Boyer, Stevenson Stout Ray Owen, Frosh Coach Intercollegiate competition consisted of debates with a number of visiting junior college teams from Logan, Provo, Ephraim and Pocatello. In addition to this, Pearson, Johnson, Young and Greene made a successful tour of southern Utah, debating with Snow, Southern Branch Agricultural College and Dixie colleges. Marvin Bertoch, Bryce Boyer, Newman Crookston and Lewis Connell travelled to Ogden for a series of debates with Weber College. Page 145 ft |
