Show The 1932 Squad The 1932 Season W,TH the moleskins of the 1932 grid siege laid away, two questions are paramount in the minds of sports followers in this sector, namely, Who and When? For the fifth consecutive year Coach Armstrong and staff have brought the Utes through to the championship. And with this title the Tribe wrote its fifth year of unblemished conference play into the records. Not since 1928 have the Redskins bowed in league contests. Now, who will stop them, and when? The Utes won all six conference games, encountering somewhat stiffer opposition than for several campaigns. Outside the ranks of the conference things were materially different. In the two games played, Utah "U" suffered an overwhelming reverse at the hands of Southern California, and was held to a tie score by an unexpectedly strong aggregation from Nevada University. On paper the 1932 performance was slightly inferior to that of several preceding years. The Crimson scored 162 points as compared with 47 points garnered by opponents. In the previous season the Armstrong machine amassed 301 points in nine encounters, while allowing but 3 I against them. The 1932 team was excellent, notwithstanding the scores. Though its offense was not as productive of scores as in other years, its faculty of being able to tally when tallies meant victory was unexcelled. Stripped of its forward pass attack when its all-conference quarterback was injured, the Tribe developed as fast a running attack as has flourished on the local greensward in years. Much credit for the team's showing is due to its brilliant leader, Captain Frank Christensen, and. its equally brilliant lineman, Jack Johnson. This year marked their cul- Page 242 |
