ANAS SUPERCILIOSA. Anas superciliosa, Linn.; Layard, P. Z. S. 1876, p. 503. Native name Toloa (Hiibner). One female from Eua (August). 19. STERNA BERGII. Sterna bergii, Licht.; Gygis, sp. ? Graffe, Journ. f. Orn. 1870, p. 403. Native name Tola (Hiibner), Tala (Graffe). One specimen from Eua (August). Since the time of Latham the occurrence of this species on the Tonga group has not been recorded; but Mr. Layard also gives evidence of its occurrence (P. Z. S. 1876, p. 503). Al. in. lin. 13 3 Caud. One old and two young specimens from Eua (August) ; the latter have the head and neck of a uniform sooty-brown; but the feathers on the forehead and vertex are acquiring greyish-white tips, so that there can be no doubt that still younger birds are uniform sooty-brown (A. rousseaui, Hartl.). Procelsterna albivitta, Bp. C. R. p. 773 (1856) ; Gould, Handb. B. Austr. ii. p. 420. Native name Lefulefu (Hiibner). Two specimens, precisely alike, from Eua (August). This species, new to the avifauna of Tonga and Central Polynesia, differs very strikingly from A. cceruleus, Bennett (A. parvulus, Gould, A. cinereus, Neboux, nee Gould), in the pale grey colour of upper parts and the delicate silvery greyish white of its head, neck, and underparts. |
