Iris de l'oiseau adulte est rouge de sang, celui du jeune blanc sale. PIAYA RUTILA (111.). Un exemplaire. BROTOGERYS PYRRHOPTERA (Lath.). Une femelle. ACCIPITER BICOLOR (Vieill.). Une femelle adulte tuee le 18 mai. Iris d'une belle couleur jaune. ORTALIDA ERYTHROPTERA, Scl. et Salv. P.Z.S. 1875, p. 540. Un exemplaire. Iris brun. Selon l'opinion exprimee dans la lettre de M. Stolzmann on peut considerer la faune de Lechugal comme intermediaire entre celles de Tumbez et de Palmal, quoique nos voyageurs y ont trouve beaucoup d'especes qu'ils n'ont pas observees dans les deux dernieres localites. La difference parmi les faunes de Tumbez et de Palmal est si grande qu'on peut a peine citer quelques especes communes, comme Ceryle cabanisii, Picolaptes souleyeti, Accipiter bicolor, Todirostrum cine-reum, Myiozetetes similis, Polioptila albilora, Prionites microstephanus, Furnarius cinnamomeus, Myiarchus rubineus, Campylorhyn-chus balteatus, Cairina moschata. II suppose aussi que les trois avant-derniers oiseaux se sont etablis dans le Palmal depuis qu'on a defriche le terrain pour l'etablissement des chacras (morceaux de terre cultivee au fond de la foret). 3. [Eeceived March 19, 1877.] In December 1875 I had the honour of presenting to the Zoological Society a paper " O n the Generic Peculiarities of the distinctively Madeiran Achatinee of Lowe "*. These peculiarities are :-1st, the extension of the mantle over the shell; and, 2nd, the presence of a mucous gland in the abruptly truncate tail. On the strength of these peculiarities I proposed the formation of a separate genus, under the name of Lovea, for this group, to which, from the examination of the animals, I was able to attach Lovea (Achatina) melam-poides, Lowe, L. tornatellina, Lowe, L. triticea, Lowe, and L. oryza, Lowe; and 1 added m y belief that these generic features would be " found common to all the distinctively Madeiran species of this group. Of course Achatina acicula and Cochlicopa lubrica (the maderensis of Lowe) fall off from it; for they certainly have not the * See P. Z. S. 1875, p. 077. |
