Show 6129 4129 place-- at a gaging station is the only place where it is possible to get measurement of this kind. I may " possible"; it is the only place where measurement of this kind have been taken, as far as the Geological Survey is concerned. By The Special Master: Q May I ask one question/ I think I asked the ques-tion of Colonel Brent. I am asking for information. I am not making a statement. I suppose on every river that carries silt there must be some kind of normal free channel. Otherwise, the river would fill up entirely, and as I remember, Colonel Brent said that on the Missouri River there was a scour and fill, but that, if nothing was done in the way a dredging, there would be a normal flow of three feet, or something of that kind; I do not remember the exact figure. I suppose that is true of every river, that, irrespective of scour and fill, there must be some kind of normal flow; otherwise thee river would stop? A Yes, I think that is true. And in the character-istic readings as we have shown then at the gaging stations there in an attempt to show what that normal depth is. Each river has to make its own law, according to the amount of silt in it. |
