Show I TERVIE~.J: Cuellar Page 30 terms of movements. I think it's a cycle of the younger ones think the older ones are traditional, conservative, lost touch with the world, so I thought of my parents and so my sons think of me, and so on and on. But it's again, there are some advantages to that in that for example, let's take SER. Nost of the people in SER probably the average age is probably 28. Quite a few in the 30's the leadership is very definitely in the 30's. And yet, I would compare our approach to everything from the Brown Berets in that we approach institutional change, bettering the population in a more sedate manner. If you're the Establishment, I'm not going to go over there and burn your building, or I'm not going to knock your door down. But we're going to negotiate and negotiate and negotiate until I win or until we reach a very good agreement. We persist, and so it's to the process of showing people, of convincing people. This type of thing . On the other hand, the younger person will say, "To hell with it, I don't need to show anybody my need. I don't need to convince anybody. I'm convinced already and hell, you give it to me or else." That's the difference I think, again the younger people are like that. One of the best examples that I know of is Jose Angel ~iterrez, ~ho started in Mecha, in Texas, and who is also now one of the, on the school board in Crystal City, Texas, leading the Raza Unida. Well, the Jose Angel Guiterrez of today is very different |
