Show IrrTERVIEW: Garcia Page 20 GC: Now, who would be the nucleus of, you mentioned these people who si~ed the charter ... now who would be some other people that got involved with you? HG: Key people? Well , of course , Gus Garcia, at that time . Of course , Dr . George I . Sanchez , who although was not a veteran would give us a lot of counsel and advice , and Carlos Cadena , who would do the same thing . But at thi s time we started t o develop our own leadership . We picked up a l ot of the Alba Club leadership in Texas , to include people l ike Ed Idar Jr ., and Chris Alderete , and Bob Sanchez , and Ed Pena f r om Laredo , and others . We picked up our leadership and I think that is what gave us the greatest nucleus because we got s ome highly educated Mexican- Americans . Up to this time in Corpus Christi, the moveme~t having been led by, you can call me a fairly educated person, perhaps not too much of an intellectual , but it was led by me , and to a certain ?Oint by my family . But then by this time we had the main bulwork . .. the females, the ladies; as early as 1950, we went into Austin to ask for anti - discrimination bill . To prevent discrimination and segregation in public spaces, publi c accomocations and schools, and at this time they wouldn ' t even listen to us; finally when we talk about thirty or forty Gold Star .nothers from Corpus Christi , headed by Mrs . Goday, they had lost |
