Koziol Forest Supervisor Wasatch Mationsl Forest 430 South 4th East Salt Lake City, Utan Dear Mr. Kozioll COpy Marc hI, 1962 Since my letter of February 19, 1962, regarding the unfavorable situation that exists with the Brighton Ski School and other component segments of the Brighton ski area, I have been informed that Mr. Woody Anderson, one of the few certified ski instructors in the area, has been discharged by the Director of the Brighton Ski Schoo, Mr. Kay Smith. I have had so many inquiries and calls regarding this vindictive act that I am writing to you for a possib,iJ.e solution. As you know, Woory Anderson has fleen~,~oing all exce~tent job promoting the area, as well as bein!?: ,ery);lwell liked, ~bd rated as one of the best ski' instructors ind;the.'! Brighton area and in the nation. To me this seems liker a1'{ ambiguous situation inasmuch as the present rirector is~in the process of being investigated and relieved of his membership in the Ski Instructors' Assoc~ion. If Mr. Smith's directorship of the Brighton Ski School cannot be altered, I am also aware that other ski areas, such aa the Pacific Northwest and Northeastern areas, which are on Forest Service leases, have more than one ski school. This would seem ver,y healthful as it would help to promote a given area, as well as to eradicate a monopolistic feeling that I am sure exists in the Brighton area. Again, as I have stated, we are striving ver,y hard to create good will in the Brighton area, and this second insult or relieving Woody Anderson from the Brighton Ski School is about as much as the area can tolerate.' I hope that an amicable solution will be forthcoming at the earliest possible date. Very truly yours, Philip M. Howard, M.D. PMHIFC CC Mr. John M. Herbert Mr. J. K. Smith 3414 Brockbank Drive Sal t Lake City, utah Dear Mr. SII11 th: 2710 March 2, 1962 Reference is made to your letter of February 12 and the meeting 01' February 21, 1962 at the Wasatch National Forest Supervisor's Otfice which you attended along with Chick Morton, Alf Engen, Woody Anderson, Supervisor Koziol, Bob Safran and Gerald Horton. We will not review here all of the topics discussed at this meeting. However, we would like to confirm some of the points developed when discussing instructor certification. It was apparant that there was some misunderstanding about instruotor certification on the part of some of those present and a lot of progress was made in clearing this up. This was especially true as to temporary or provisional certification of instructors. The requirement for instructor certification and qualification is written into all National Forest special Use Permits to insure that the public will repeive adequate and competant service from ski school operations on public lands and we are, therefore, all interested in instructor certification and that proper procedures be followed by all concerned at all times. The Intermountain Ski Instructors Association has now adopted a policy of conducting interim certification tests (between the main Fall and Spring Clinics) whenever 6 or more ski instructor candidates in any one area are ready to try for certification. Dates for these tests are to be set by the certification committee of the ISlA after receiving requeets from Ski School Directors or area operators. It was agreed that requests for these interim certification tests would be accompanied by a $25.00 deposit for each candidate to cover certitios;" .1 tion expense and $10.00 to cover one year membership dues in the ISlA. The $25.00 certification fee will be held in escrow by the ISIA until the certification tests have been completed and finally retained whether or not the candidate is successful in passing the certification tests. We understand that an interim certification date has been set for the Brighton and Alta Ski Schools • . _--------------- As agreed at the February 21 meeting, any candidate for certification who fails to pass the interim test will, upon request of the Ski school Director or area operator, be considered for provisional or temporary certification, to be good only for the balance of the current ski Beason or until the next certification clinic. This consideration will be made by a committee consisting of a Forest Service representative, the Ski School Director, and a representative of the ISIA, if aTailable. A copy of this letter is being sent to the Alta, Snow Basin, Magic Mountain and Idaho Falls Ski School for their information; this at the request of John Herbert, Assistant Regional Forester in charge of Recreation and Lands in our ogden Regional Office. cc: Mr. Alf Engen Al ta Ski Scho 01 2293 E. 6200 So. salt Lake City, Utah Mr. Earl Miller Snow Basin Ski school 1657 - 24th Ogden, Utah Mr. Calude Jone3 Magic Mountain Ski School 292 Blue Lakes Blvd., N. The following people are to be teaching at the Brighton Ski School. They are listed by categories to the best of our information and it would be appreciated if you would verify their certification and comment on any difference noted. Full Instrulor Wally Abersold, Dave Parkinson, Dean Roberts, K. We would like to know if the above status is correct according to your records and would appreciate this at your earliest convenience. ~ We have given the Brighton Ski School permission to use the following persons for two weeks on a tryout basis: John Brinton, Dick Coons, Amanda Creer, Mac Thomson, Dick Wolfley. If they show ability they will apply for registration with I.S.I.A. and if they do not they will be dropped from the ski school. This tryout period has been granted so the ski school director can check their ability in actual teaching and retain those who can develop into certified instructors. /~ - ~------------------~ CERTIFIED SKI TEACHER INTERMOUNTAIN SKI ASSOCIATION \ INTERMOUNTAIN SKI INSTRUCTORS ASSOCIATION \ eL-~~~ November 29, 1962 1'\ Mro Fo Co Koziol Forest Supervisor Wasatch National Forest 430 South 4th East Salt Lake City 11, Utah Dear Mr. Kozoil: Reference your letter of November 26th, our records indicate the following: FULL INSTRUCTORS Wally Abersold, Dave Parkinson, Dean Roberts to be in good standing. Ko Smith is not currently a member of the I.S.I.A. ASSOCIATE INSTRUCTORS Chuck Fields, Terry Grogan, Ron Hi'll, John Martin, Dick Mulder, Clark Sanford, Lee Sne:daker and Bob Young to be in good standing. Roger Haran, according to our records, is still in the Armed Forces """' and does not have a valid First Aid card 0 Bob Co Smith is in good standin1but we have no record of a current First Aid card. Steve Jensen is not certified in the 1, S, 1, A, Our records show that Steve took the exam Dec, 9th and 10th, 1961 but failed to complete the requirements of the examination 0 Notification of this was mailed Jan 0 10, 1962 and I am sure you have a copy of this notice, APPRENTICE Our records show that Orval Baker applied for and paid $25.00 for an exam, the exam being held April 14th, 1962, and he failed to pass the exam 0 Naturally the pay men! he made WBfJ [01' (,hal. olle eXlilJJ. We have not received a $10.00 registration fee this year from John Allred, Orval Baker or from Curtis Coulam, nor a $25000 exam fee from any of the three 0 Either their $35000 checks were never issued) are being held by the Brighton Ski School Director, or are lost in the mails. I find nothing in our files pertaining to the Forest Service gJvmg a Ski School special permission to use persons on a tryout basis 0 Our files show that the standard Temporary Permit is to be issued only with the recommendation of the I, So Io A, and notes taken indicate that you agreed last year that this was the proper method, It appears to the writer that this two week gimmick is a foot-in-the -door proposition which will require policing to see that the time is not extended to three, four, six or more weeks, More records must be set up and perhaps then more records to keep track of possible Trial Applicants to the Tryout Mr. F. Co Koziol November 29~ 1962 Page #2 Applicants. Does the Ski School plan to collect money from the Public for lessons from Tryout Applicants Q Wlll the Tryout ApplicaJ2t be accompanied at all times by a CertHied Instructor during this trial per-iod? .rtl this a new way for a Ski School Director to obtain cheap help'? The writer is at a loss as to the need for such a permission especially when a standard plan is already In effect 0 Can you concievably see why a Ski School Director 9 who has been in this business for many years, cannot through observation tell whether an applicant is made of good instructor material without resorting to such a gimmick. Thls observation can readily be made during the Deseret News Ski School. Naturally since you have given permission for the tryout basis, the responsibility for same rests with you. SincerelY9 M. I conclude this after reading a letter from Mr. Koziol, asking about a roster of your instructors and their status' with our association. One of your people you list as associate has no status with us at all. Some of the people you say have deposited $35.00. With whom? Certainly not the I.S.I.A. Our policy clearly states applications for registration are subject to approval of our B. O. D. How can we approve or disapprove if we have no application from you? You were denied membership in our organization for reason of ethics ,and I believe that your action in this particular instance shows a continuation of those very same unethical practices. Our concern is !3.S?l. who has the power in organized ski teaching, but, is the public receiving a good ski lesson? Frankly, I feel that in some instances they (the public) nt'" 1W' gf:"UiJl,IJ,' Efo;luu instruction in your ski school, as a result of your convenient method of using a constant turn over of so -calJed apprentice instructors, or instructors who are not quite entrusted enough in the ski teaching profession to meet our standards to become certified.
