Show Record time. Both of us in the boat with the supplies. We were in the boat half the time and we were out trying to locate a deep channel and pulling the boat across through the shallow water the other 3783 half of the time, and at times we had difficulty in finding where the deep water was; and that occasioned both of us getting out of the boat at times. We always had our shoes and leggings off so 3784 that we could jump out instantly when the boat was grounding. As I recall we were five hours coming down that 17 miles. In supplying our party with food and other things required on the trip, I had supplies brought overland to various points on the river. The first supplies that were brought to us overland after we started our journey down the river were brought to Good-rich. We also received supplies at Honiker Trial, Slick Horn Gulch, Piute Farms, Clay Gulch, Copper Canyon, Spencer's Camp, Piute Can-yon, and then Loper brought a sack of flour up the San Juan River to 3786 our camp at 13- foot rapids. Loper and I had to tow a boat up stream to get supplies for the second time at Spencer Camp. That is the trip I mentioned on the direct examination where we towed the boat up stream 17 miles and came back in five hours. We loaded the supplies on the boat at Spencer Camp and took them down the river to Piute Creek. The next place we got supplies was at the mouth 3788 of the San Juan River, where a grub cache had been made. We did not get any supplies from the mouth of the San Juan River until we reached there. We stayed off the river with our boats because of floods 3789 four or five times, lasting from half a day to two days each. I recall mentioning the fact on my direct examination that I was grounded several times at Piute Farms; and I recall being grounded below Clay Hill Gulch. I remember I specified a grounding as having occurred two miles below Clay Hill Gulch. I did not specify that grounding as the particular grounding of which I had any recollection but merely happened to mention it as one among many 3790 others. I mentioned this particular grounding because there the channel of the river is especially wide, and it is very conducive |
