Show Record be on the outside of a bend. When the river would change its course, and there would be a bend in the opposite direction, the water would shift from one side of the stream to the other. Between those two stretches of deep water there would be a crossing bar, with shallow water in many places. The crossing bar would extend clear across the river in some places and the water over it would be shallow. It would be in such places as that that we would have trouble with the grounding. We could get along farily well in water about 6 inches deep. As I remember if the water was less than 5 inches deep, it was necessary to pick up the boat and carry one and around at a time to get it tin the deeper water. We found no such occasions on this particular trip. At Spencer Camp we loaded on 400 pounds of supplies and 3770 the down stream trip required about 5 hours. All of the time that this party was on the San Juan River, all of the supplies were brought overland, except those we started 3771 out with at Bluff and they lasted until we got to Goodrich. We obtained supplies at several places that came down the various trails and met us at the river. I am familiar with a rapid on the Colorado River known as Aztec Rapid. I would judge from the character of the water in all of the rapids that I have designated on the San Juan River that all of them compare in size, or are worse than the Aztec Rapid. 3772 Our work was completed when we reached the mouth of the San Juan. On the 4th of October we decided to go to Hole- In- The- Rock on the Colorado. Bert Loper and Blake each rode a boat to a point opposite Hole- In- The- Rock, meeting five of us who had walked to that point. We were taken across the river in those two boats and climbed up the canyon wall on the west side. We then came down to the river and got in these boats and went down to camp at the mouth of the San Juan. The next day we were visited by several persons who had been with the surveying party in Cataract Canyon. Three boats were brought down by that party. That afternoon, October 5th, four others and myself made a trip to Lees Ferry and |
