Show Record I could not say the changing was daily, weekly or monthly. That sand is working and rolling and I do not believe I could express it 3627 any better than to say " continually". I have been on the shore camping at night and heard the water boil for a little while and then it would be still and after a while it would come again. They called it sand waves, and I think it was. Sometimes the waves would start rolling, maybe not more than a foot high, and they would keep on increasing until they would get up four or five foot and then level out again. 3628 I went down there in 1905 and started farming and stayed there until September, 1914. During that time the river did not cut the banks so as to injure the farm. We got water for the farm from Trachyte Creek. We had difficulty with ice once. In the winter time I have seen a lot of ice come down floating and got into a still place 3629 and gorge, and then if it freezes, it will sometimes give difficulty. I have noticed ice gorges at a number of places. That happens pretty nearly every year. I have been on the Green River but never boated a great deal. I have been a number of times down to the mouth of the San 3630 Rafael. I was one time down to a place that was called Bonard Bend. My purpose was just to see the river. I had a row boat. I got back up the river by rowing and pulling. While at Hite I observed a number of floods. They come generally at the peak of high water, about the 1st of June. The high water is caused by melting snow. The flood season sets in 3631 July and August and are caused by cloud- bursts. There at Hite I would say the difference between low water and high water would be in the neighborhood of 20 feet. There is a road out from North wash on the west side of the Colorado. The road from Hite to North wash is on the west side of the river. There is no road from Hite down to Hanson Creek. By pack train you can go from Hite clear down to Good Hope. Below Good Hope the wall rock comes down to the water, so only in extreme |
